Fantastic experience: This is for those who have lost some data that was stored on their smartphone. Please contact Datalab Ltd in Auckland, New Zealand. They are the must-go-to place. They helped retrieve all my WhatsApp Chats and Notes from a smashed and water-logged smartphone. They do what they claim to be capable of. However, you have to tell them - first - your phone type. Secondly, be truthful about the nature of the damage that your phone endured. Thirdly, if you lost your notes, please inform the lab on what App the notes were saved: Either on the phone's default notepad or on a third-party notepad. As a writer, I couldn't thank Datalab expertise more for retrieving my thousands of notes. They are amazingly patient too, while working with those who aren't sure of how to guide them with the hunt for their data. How good is that! Immense gratitude!

Fantastic experience: I had a dead Surface Laptop with a non-removable SSD (soldered to motherboard) containing 120GB of my own research work, maps and photos - mostly relating to my late father's overseas military service. My bootable USB with LINUX approach did not work. A small-time IT repairer advertised data recovery but I found they couldn't recover from soldered SSD drives. I found DataLab online and they responded to my web enquiry on the same evening (7pm), via e-mail. Next morning DataLab telephoned me and proposed a data recovery solution. 3 working days later DataLab provided me the recovered data. All lost data was recovered and provided on USB. Fantastic experience: I can't remember the name of the gentleman who helped me (I think maybe it was Cam or Cameron?), but I'd ridden my e-bike down to drop off a hard drive & didn't realise until I'd pulled up that I didn't have the key for my bike lock. So I called up and asked if somebody could run down & grab it for me. He said there was a bit of paperwork to fill out, but he could come down and watch my bike for me while I ran up and filled it out. So that's what we did. It didn't take long, but it was super helpful & I really appreciated it. It turned out the part that was needed for my hard drive was more expensive than the work I would have lost, so I opted against it, but Datalab does a free assessment, so the whole thing didn't cost me anything & the staff was very understanding, communicative & helpful. 10 out of 10 service. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: Can't recommend this place more. Amazing service, affordable prices, quick turnaround time. I originally taking my damaged Hard Drive to PAYAM, I was quoted $1250 for the repair and was told it was going to take 6-10 weeks, and even if I didn't receive my photos back I would have to pay $500. After feeling very discouraged, I went in to Datalab to get a second opinion and within a day they let me know they would be able to recover all my data for less than half the price! The staff were all so friendly and the turnaround time was ridiculously fast. I can't thank Datalab enough for saving all my precious holiday memories (and also saving me from being completely ripped off!).

Positive experience: I've sent a hard drive in to Datalab to be assessed for recovery. They have very good systems for communicating to customers the status of the request. As soon as I had dropped off the disk I returned to find an email with account login. One day later I received an update with information about expected completion times. Very well organised.

Fantastic experience: Last week I dropped my IPhone 6 in water which completely destroyed the phone. In a panic I spent hours on the phone with Apple trying to recover my photos and videos of my children and husband but they were unable to retrieve anything. The phone wouldn't even turn on and Apple advised me there was no way of retrieving my irreplaceable photos. In desperation I called Datalab and he advised me that for anything like this it is time critical and to get the phone into them as quickly as possible. Within 24 hours I received a call back from Datalab to advise that they had been able to retrieve EVERYTHING. Every photo, video, message - it was all there. Nothing short of a miracle! Fantastic experience: We own a hotel and when our hard drives failed, and the backup, that we thought existed in the cloud, wasn't in fact there, we were referred to Data Lab, and they worked their magic. We were told by our own IT consultant that there was no way of retrieving anything however we received 100% of the data back in less than 24 hours. Fantastic experience: I am not one to write a review often however the work that Datalab did for me was exceptional. I have a 2008 Lexus GS450h and the navigation system hard drive was failing intermittently. Lexus NZ were unable to help, supply a new drive or even supply and install a complete replacement system. Lexus have the copy protection security well locked down and i was completely unable to copy the drive. After months of chasing options i contacted Datalab who were able to source and physically merge a brand new drive with my failed drive to create a fully functioning 'new' drive. The level of technical expertise that Datalab have on board is second to none. Highly recommended.

Negative experience: One of the worst customer experience I've had. The communication from the company was extremely lacking. At first they told us they would finish the recovery attempt in a couple of hours, we asked specifically how long it would take since we were planning on going out of town for 2 days. Because they said it would be done for sure the same day we waited around in Auckland. Although, as time went by nobody called us. 2 hours before they closed we called them but got connected to a call center where they told us they would find the person doing the job and get back to us. We waited another hour but nobody called. With only 1 hour until they closed we decided to drive there and ask how it's going. This time the person said that it normally takes them 2 days to finish the recovery and that they hadn't even started it. He also told us that they could finish it the same day if we payed another $500 for it being urgent. We also got an email earlier that stated that they would do a free assessment and then get back to us for a quote for the actual job and the chances of it being successful. We left feeling very disappointed because the first person told us it would definitely be done the first day and we postponed our plans because of this. The next day we just got an email saying that the job was done and that we owed them $380. Apparently no assessment had been done and we didn't get a quote or the chances of recovery. We called and asked if they managed to get the data back because they sent us an invoice but they did not want to tell us before we paid. We drove to them and asked what type of data they had recovered and they said they got videos and thumbnails of photos. I couldn't look at it myself until I payed so I did. When I later looked through the data they didn't recover anything of the data I wanted. The only thing they did was copy everything that was already on the phone and handed it over on a USB-drive. When I went back and told them this they said that it was impossible to give an estimate of the chances of being successful so that's why they didn't do an assessment. And that apparently it's really difficult to recover the data from the start. If I would have known this I wouldn't have asked them to try. I called around to see for other options and they said that it's near impossible to get this type of data back and anyone who claims they can are probably lying. Please don't use this company because you will get ripped off. (Edit to respond to the company) To answer the first thing you wrote regarding the costs. In your response you said that the initial work form I received that the costs and process was explained. I do not agree since the following is what the email said: "We suggest that if your data is important to you and you want to have the best chance of getting it back that you at least get an Assessment. To confirm it's a free of charge service and done by a specialist and experienced Data Recovery Technician. From this, you will then know where you stand on both the chances and costs of getting your data back." I did not get back on this assessment on either the chances of getting the material back nor the expected costs for it. I would understand the timing if you would have explained it in the beginning. When I left the device with you I asked how long it would take and the person said it would only take a couple of hours. I asked multiple times to be sure because we then postponed our trip. Then I did not hear anything, you did not return my call and when I drove by you informed me you had not even started the job. That was unsatisfactory communication on your part. Lastly, I understand that you could not guarantee a 100% chance of retrieval, but as I explained above, it is the communication from your part that was extremely lacking.

I wanted to see if there was anything further I could explain re process or outcomes as your review doesn't line up with my recollection of our (you and I) discussion in reception. I can see two issues in your review being cost and timing. With regard to costs I note your initial inquiry at Sun, 26 Nov 2023 at 8:15 AM was met with a returned email and work form. The work form within explains process and costs explicitly including the progression to reporting on all working devices. Essentially with working phones, the 'assessment' is to determine that we can interface and achieve extractions. We then specifically set up the process to allow the team to proceed unhindered (waiting on calls or reply) if we can make a connection with the phone to avoid missing an opportunity to recover and/or to complete cases in a timely manner for the next client. With respect to timing, we can only ever express expectations. Hardware nuances, data volumes and connectivity issues all influence timing. The labs notes on your case detail 'Managed to extract with Cellebrite after many attempts'. That is to say your phone took 'many' 3 hour blocks to get a successful extraction. I note, if time was critical, there was a block where you device could have been returned prior to reporting being completed and we take responsibility if you don't feel this was communicated. You seemed to understand the process and lab requirements when we spoke which is why I'm perplexed that your review suggests otherwise. On a case where the team has invested so much to achieve a result - if feels a little backhanded to receive such a scathing review. Perhaps you might consider changing your review in light of the above. Finally, I believe your review perhaps reflects your disappointment at not recovering the images and videos your were after. The lab is unable to discern at any point other than on completion and review of reporting what might be recoverable from any given device. All we can offer is the opportunity to employ world class tools to attempt the recovery exercise. The outcome is out of anyone's hands. If the images aren't in the recovery we are provisioned it can be due to any number of factors including subsequent use, self recovery attempts, memory handling by the device and the list goes on. If its worth a call, let me know and I can tee up early next week as I'm court the remainder of the present work. Otherwise, email me here and we can iron out any remaining concerns. I hope the above details further the works the team has put in and the reason we ask you to reconsider your review of our labs.

Positive experience: Shame that their low price does not include the parts to recover phone data. Firstly, I was not contacted with the diagnostic results and had to call them myself to find out. Fantastic experience: Full data recovery from a failed 6 year old Mac hard drive, transferred to a new 1TB drive in 5 working days immediately after the Christmas period. Great face to face service with a clear explanation of the process, the range of possible outcomes and the likely price range for the work to be completed. The price was at the top end of that range but represented good value for me, especially as there were irreplaceable items of sentimental value on the drive. Positive experience: They've had my drive since September 2016. They weren't able to recover the drive at all, 2 and a half years later. Getting cryptic and sporadic emails saying "maybe in another 6 months" when I contact them first and ask them for an update. They had the wrong address on the return courier invoice, and they wouldn't respond to their own ticketing system or my emails to their support staff via their own website about my request to get this address changed. Only when they called me to ask why I hadn't paid their wrongly billed invoice, did they finally update the delivery address. EDIT: Cameron from DataLab has reached out to explain where the communication problems ocurred, and their shortcomings in this area. A big problem was that there were no transparancy of work being done, even if it was done behind the scenes. Still need some work at replying to their ticketing system and replying to their website email queries, but other than that, I applaud him for taking the time to call his customer to straighten up any misunderstandings and failures.

Positive experience: In my case, I found it frustrating to not receive timely updates to my job. I did not receive these via freshdesk, although these were updated, usually after I had called in. The staff are friendly and helpful over the phone, but I found it frustrating to not have regular feedback, unless I called in. In my case, my water damaged iPhoneX data could not be recovered. It does seem like Datalab does not do chipset transplant to working motherboard. This is understandable on the iPhone X due to it's complexity. Neutral review - not exceptionally bad or good.
